IRIS 4-2 Resource Sharing Wiki
About IRIS 4-2
IRIS 4-2 (Information Research Instruction Suite for 2-year colleges) is a set of information literacy tutorials designed specifically for students in two-year colleges. The project was initially funded by a grant from the Distance Learning Council of Washington and subsequently became a sabbatical project. The goal was to create a site, linked to information literacy outcomes and assesment, that librarians in WA community colleges can use "as is." However, the site is also designed so that librarians can download and modify the tutorials to make them more college-specific.
Creating one site that meets the needs of both students and librarians is challenging. Community college students vary widely in skills and educational goals; designing a set of modules that meet the level and variety of needs will be an on-going challenge. Community college librarians are faced with time constraints and minimal staffing levels. In designing the site, I tried to keep the site as easy to modify as possible. Anyone can use the IRIS tutorials on our site (www.clark.edu/Library/iris) but files are also available for downloading, installing and modifying. IRIS 4-2 was officially put into use Fall 2008. In Winter 2009 it was accepted into the PRIMO database. During academic year 2009-2010 Clark College Librarians and faculty are collaborating to embed the IRIS modules into select coursework. Librarians at other institutions are also beginning, download, modify and use the IRIS 4-2 modules. This wiki provides a resouce for documenting and sharing all this activity.
